Theresienstadt

Former concetration camp situated in little Czech town Terezin some 45 minutes driving from Prague. Nazis decided in 1941 to use empty military base of disbanded Czechoslovak army for purposes of transit and forced labor camp. Czech citizens of the town (where barracks of army were located) were expeled in 1942 and from that time on the whole town served as a camp. Later in the war nazis also used Theresienstadt as place of their propaganda and efforts to create false notion that Jews under their rule don’t suffer. Civilian citizens and Czechoslovak army came back to the town after the war. Army left the town after communist regime ended, but civilian citizens live in the town, which is almost completely preserved. There were around 35 000 casualties in Theresienstadt itself and over 80 000 people died after deportations from Theresienstadt to extermination camps.

Tour of Theresienstadt usually takes around five hours, including both ways (from Prague). Tour covers the Museum of Ghetto, hidden synagogue, Magdeburg barracks, cemetery and krematorium and many other preserved sights of Theresienstadt
